Andy Weir's The Martian
The Martian by Andy Weir
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Knowing the backstory of the book here, it's clear the author Andy Weir had every chance to tweak the (originally self-published) factual content over a long period through the collaboration of an unknown number of early readers with skill levels ranging from knowledgeable geek to astronaut. However. The technical consults can't take away any credit for the masterful suspense and humour that Andy infused into the narrative. In (well) over 50 years of reading science fiction I can't remember any book that grabbed and held my attention quite so firmly as this very elegant first publication by Mr Weir. The quality of the content is easily judged by the number of people who jumped on the book - including members of my family (who were raised right) who suggested I "might" want to read it. Oh yeah - and Ridley Scott and Matt Damon (!!!) made a movie of it... Although I have to apologise to the author that the "favourite quote" I asked him to sign at an event was apparently created by the movie screenwriter and not part of the original book. Still "Science the heck out of it" is still totally in line with the spirit of the book. I look forward to many more!
